Inkjet vs Laser Printer

Inkjet vs Laser Printer

One of the most common question we get from a customer when it is time to buy a new printer or to replace an old printer is should we buy an inkjet printer or a laser printer?

What is the difference between an inkjet printer and a laser printer?

An inkjet printer uses inkjet cartridges which has liquid ink, whereas a laser printer uses a laser toner cartridge which has toner powder.

I only need black and white printouts.

Get a monochrome (Black only) laser printer.  Your cost per copy will be the lowest possible.  Also, if you do not print often you will not have issues with ink drying because laser powder won’t dry or evaporate like liquid ink.

I need color printouts.

Your decision will most likely be based on your budget.  If you have a tight budget?  Go with an inkjet printer using 4 or more cartridges.
Budget not an issue?  Go with a laser color printer.

Top 5 advantages of a monochrome (black) laser printer.

Cost per copy
The main advantage of using a monochrome laser printer is definitely the cost per copy.
Does not dry
Another advantage is the fact that laser toner uses laser toner powder and it does not dry up like an inkjet cartridge.
Great for occasional user
If you do not print often, a laser printer is ready to print when you are.  Even if you have not used your printer for weeks or months, when you are ready to print, your laser printer is ready.  Unfortunately, it is not always the case for an inkjet printer.
Print speed
In general, laser printers print faster than inkjet printers.  Look for the PPM (page per minute) for your printer.
Change cartridge less often
Laser cartridges are bigger and have a higher yield than an inkjet cartridge.  As a result, you won’t have to change your cartridge as often as an inkjet cartridge.

Top 5 advantages of an inkjet printer.

Initial cost
The initial cost of buying an inkjet printer could significantly be less than that of buying a laser printer.  Especially, if you compare the cost of an inkjet printer vs. a color laser printer.  Cost of using the printer could be a whole different issue depending on the model chosen.

Photo Quality
Inkjet printers usually produce better photo quality printouts than laser printers.  That is why most professional photographers and graphic artists uses inkjet printers.

Lightweight & Compact
Most inkjet printers will fall under the category of lightweight and compact, which makes them a perfect fit for a lot people.  Whether you lack space or travel a lot, a small lightweight inkjet printer might be the solution.

Cost of cartridge
The cost of an inkjet cartridge is usually a lot less than the cost of a laser cartridge.  Do not confuse the cost of a cartridge with the cost per copy.  Compatible inkjet cartridges are available on for as low as $1.89 and compatible laser toner cartridges starts at $17.89

A lot of inkjet cartridges can be refilled and reused, which makes it more environmentally friendly.  Laser cartridges can also be refilled but the expertise required is a lot higher than refilling an inkjet cartridge.
